Rights and Benefits of an Australian Citizenship
The rights of Australian citizens include:
  • The unrestricted right to work and live in Australia
  • The unrestricted right to travel to Australia
  • The right to an Australian Passport
  • The right to claim diplomatic protection while outside Australia and
  • The right to enrol to vote at local, state and federal elections
Requirements
Permanent residents in Australia can apply for Australian citizenship by conferral, four years after having been granted permanent resident status. Generally, they must have lived in Australia for a required period of time, have basic English language skills, be of good character and must pass a citizenship knowledge test (if aged between 18 and 60 years).

After the citizenship application is approved, there is usually a ceremony to celebrate the applicant’s acceptance by the Australian community. During this ceremony, Australian Citizenship is awarded.

Australian Citizenship Test
Since October 2007 everybody applying for Australian citizenship must pass the Australian Citizenship Test. The test is specifically designed to test an applicant’s knowledge and familiarity with Australian principles, the English language and national and historical background.

Every applicant has to answer 20 multiple choice questions selected from a total of 200 questions that are selected randomly from a pre-prepared list by the Australian Government. There are three compulsory questions which must be answered correctly to pass. Additionally, each applicant has to reach a minimum score of 60% to pass the test.
In early 2008 the Government announced that almost a quarter of those who took the test failed .
